Ultrasound of joints provides more information than X-ray. Sometimes it can replace even an MRI. One of the advantages of ultrasound of the joints is the possibility of careful examination of the areas of particular concern to the patient, which are determined directly during the ultrasound (when gently pressing the ultrasound transducer on the joint).
We will be glad to see you in our Berehynia Medical Center.
Ultrasound of joints
The joints constantly handle the loads of different degrees, that is why inflammation, unpleasant or painful sensations can occur at any age. This is especially true for people involved in professional sports. The ultrasound examination of joints allows detecting any changes in soft tissues and provide the necessary medical assistance.
Traditionally, X-rays are used to examine the musculoskeletal system. In fact, this method is not detailed enough and does not allow examining the cartilages, skeletal muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments, joint capsules, nerve fibers, etc. That’s why, X-ray and ultrasound are often used in combination to carefully evaluate the soft and hard tissues, their structure and any dystrophic or degenerative changes.
Ultrasound of joints: what types are distinguished?
Any musculoskeletal complaints can be a reason to consult a doctor. Usually it all starts with morning stiffness: the first sign signaling a gradual development of different types of diseases. You should also pay attention to pain, reduced mobility, swelling and changes in the colour of the skin of the joints. Preventative screening is also done for patients who have been injured and people over 50 with overweight.
The main advantage of the procedure is its versatility: there are no restrictions on how many times to use ultrasound and the area of the body where ultrasound is done. The following types of joints are examined:
- shoulder: to detect any inflammation, degenerative changes, injuries of different severity;
- elbow: the main feature here is the complicated structure of the joint; ultrasound is effective in detecting even minor injuries, which are often found in young patients;
- wrist: mostly used in surgery or to confirm/refute suspicion of cancer;
- hip: a common reason for ultrasound of joints is age-related changes, which are considered an unfavourable factor for development of inflammation, abnormalities, injuries, etc.;
- knee: in case of pain, bruises and injuries, allows detecting various damages and monitor the recovery process;
- ankle: in case of swelling, suspected development of inflammation, trauma;
- temporomandibular: in case of excessive cracking, problems with articulation and chewing food.
A modern expert class ultrasound scanner is used to perform the procedure. It is characterized by high speed, accuracy and allows obtaining a clear image. No special preparation for the ultrasound is required. The procedure lasts about 30 minutes, after which the patient is given a doctor’s report of the findings and further recommendations.
Where is ultrasound done in Lviv?
Berehynia Medical Center is located in the city center and invites everyone who has health complaints. Our highly qualified specialists will perform a comprehensive examination. Depending on the area being scanned, the procedure can be performed in a standing, lying or sitting position. If a patient has problems with the musculoskeletal system and intra-articular injections are used for treatment or to relieve pain, such injections should be stopped 3-5 days before the visit in order not to distort the results of the ultrasound of joints.
