Rectoscopy is an endoscopic examination that allows to diagnose the rectum and distal sigmoid colon.
Rectoscopy makes it possible to examine the mucosa at a depth of 30-35 cm from the anus using a special device – a rectoscope (a flexible tube with a built-in illumination device and an air blower).
During this procedure, a visual examination of the intestinal mucosa is performed, and, if necessary, the doctor can take a tissue biopsy from the required area and remove certain formations, such as polyps.
Indications for rectoscopy are suspicion of certain proctologic diseases, the symptoms of which may include: – pain in the anal area; – stool disorders (diarrhea or constipation); – discharge of blood, mucus or pus from the anus.
An important stage is the preparation scheme for the procedure, which must be approved by the doctor before it is performed.
