A cyst is one of the mammary gland pathologies that is common in women of reproductive age. It is a hollow formation that is filled with fluid inside. It appears due to excessive growth of connective tissue in the ducts of the gland, leading to stagnation and accumulation of secretions.

Breast cyst puncture is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic intervention that involves puncturing the cyst with a special needle under ultrasound guidance to obtain its contents. The mammologist sends the cells obtained as a result of the puncture for cytological examination. The procedure itself is painless, some discomfort is possible during the puncture. It lasts 15-20 minutes. It is the puncture that will help the mammologist choose the most effective treatment method.

What are the causes of breast cysts?

  • Hormonal disorders of the female reproductive system;
  • constant emotional tension, stress;
  • overweight;
  • pathologies of the thyroid gland.

Do all cysts need to be punctured?

Cysts can be of different sizes:

  • Cysts of small size (up to 1 cm) are painless and usually do not disturb. They can be detected by mammography or ultrasound. They require only observation;
  • Large cysts (2 cm and larger) – filled with secretory fluid, can cause pain, burning and even suppuration. Therefore, in such cases, it is worth performing a cyst puncture, both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
