Main/ Services/ Ambulatory Gynaecology/ Pipelle endometrial biopsy

Pipelle biopsy is a modern, fast and less traumatic procedure for collecting tissue from the uterine cavity.

The method is used to diagnose various pathologies of the uterine mucosa, i.e. the endometrium.

A special Pipelle device, a flexible plastic tube with a side hole at the end, is used to collect the tissue.

This method eliminates the possibility of infection, as the tool is disposable and is in a sterile packaging. It is disposed of after use.

How is the procedure done?

  1. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to examine the walls of the vagina and cervix.
  2. The pipelle is inserted into the uterine cavity. The doctor pulls out the piston by half its length, creating negative pressure in the cylinder. At the same time, endometrial tissue from different areas is sucked into the cylinder (this part of the procedure can cause pain, which is often observed during menstruation, and usually passes after the procedure is completed).
  3. The device is removed from the uterus, and the obtained material is sent to the laboratory.

The whole procedure takes no more than 30 seconds.

Indications for the Pipelle biopsy include the following:

  • infertility;
  • abnormal uterine bleeding;
  • bleeding in the middle of the cycle, during menopause and administration of hormonal medications;
  • heavy bleeding during premenopause (suspicion of endometrial cancer);
  • endometrial hyperplasia;
  • chronic endometritis;
  • miscarriage (early miscarriages).
