Main/ Services/ Ambulatory Gynaecology/ Endobrushing (endocervical curettage)

The cervical canal is the part of the cervix that connects the vagina and uterus. Its main function is protection against pathogens entering the uterus. There are conditions that can affect the cervical canal, in particular due to inflammation or neoplasms.

Endobrushing or endocervical curettage is a diagnostic method that involves taking cells and tissues from the mucous membrane of the cervical canal for further examination under a microscope.

This procedure is performed with the aim of clarifying and confirming the clinical diagnosis, determining the initial stages of the disease or tumour processes.

The procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic.

Indications for endocervical curettage:

  • cervical dysplasia with suspicion of involvement of the cervical canal;
  • polyps in the cervical canal;
  • cervical adhesions;
  • change in the thickness of the internal tissues lining the cervical canal.
